Rev. Dr.
Florence S. Brown is the proud mother of
three children and seven grandchildren
and the widow of the late Mr. Archie
Brown, Jr., her loving and supportive
husband.
She received her Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Mt. Olive. She also matriculated at University of North Carolina at Wilmington. In 2008 Livingstone College conferred upon her a Honorary Doctor of Ministry.
Prior to becoming a full-time pastor, Dr. Brown studied and excelled in the medical profession. She received her certification as a Health Record Analyst and served as an instructor in medical terminology at Brunswick Community College. She also served as a medical records consultant for several health care facilities. As a health care professional, she served as a member of the Board of Directors for the following: Columbus County Health Department, Waccamaw Medical Center, and the North Carolina Medical Records Association.
Dr. Brown’s career exhibits her dedication and commitment to civic and community service, which include serving on the East Columbus High School Advisory Board, a Board member of First Bank, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Dr. Brown serves as the Presiding Elder of the Lumberton District which comprises of 23 congregations in the Cape Fear Conference – Eastern North Carolina Episcopal District.
She became the first female Presiding Elder in the Cape Fear Conference in October 2019. In 2004, she was also appointed to serve as pastor of Chrysolite A.M.E. Zion Church in Lumberton, North Carolina. As an effective leader, she led the congregation within a short period of time in purchasing land - debt free, and erected a new sanctuary, and later acquired additional land for future expansion. She also organized a capital campaign to secure the most favorable mortgage and oversaw the construction of this magnificent edifice, now known as Greater Chrysolite A.M.E. Zion Church. Dr. Brown has also served many pastorates in the A.M.E. Zion Church. During her tenure as pastor, she was honored as Pastor-of-the Year by the Cape Fear Conference - three consecutive years for church growth and recipient of the George J. Leake Memorial Young Minister’s Award. She was the first female to pastor a first church in the Cape Fear Conference.
