Family - Alonzo Braggs was born July 18, 1960 in Wilmington, North Carolina to Mr. Edward Earl and Idell Nixon Braggs, the second in a set of identical twins. The former Laurice Anita Guess became his wife on May 13, 1989 at Walls Temple African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in New London, Connecticut. They are the proud parents of four children: Everett Deon Dillon Guess (Stephanie Renee Furtick), Algiers Jameal Dillon (Shea Lynn Simmons), Michael James Braggs Esq. (Sarah Lea Pinkston) and Epiphany Ajabe' Braggs. Alonzo and Laurice have also been blessed with thirteen grand children which includes two sets of twins and a surviving tripplet: Tantanea Damisha Guess, Alexis Patrice Guess, Algiers Jameal William Dillon Jr., Everett Deon, Dillon Guess Jr., Alyssa Laurice Guess, Josiah Thomas Rocket-Simmons, Jaice Lee Rocket-Simmons, Savien Levi Dillon, Reece Michael Braggs, Lea Lynn Patra Dillon, Matayo Joseph Dillon, Morgan Michael Braggs, and Michael Lea Braggs. To the Glory of God they also have two great grand children: Earl Stephon Wilson IV, and zohlee Penelope Wilson.

 

Ministry - Alonzo Braggs preach his Trial Sermon on August 22, 1977 at Saint Andrews African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Wilmington, North Carolina, Wilmington District, Cape Fear Annual Conference. His Quarterly Conference licensed him as a Local Preacher on September 19, 1977 and recommended him to the District Conference. At the District Conference held at Walters Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, a church where he would later be asked to serve as the Youth Pastor, he was recommended to the Annual Conference. During the annual session of the Cape Fear Conference at Saint John, African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, Wilson, North Carolina, on October 27, 1977, Alonzo Braggs was Admitted on Trial into the Conference and on October 30, 1977, he received his Conference Evangelist Appointment. He was Ordained a Deacon on October 26, 1985, in that same church eight years later while on leave from the military. While on military leave from Germany, May 28, 1989, he was Ordained an Elder  at the church where he began his ministerial journey, at the same altar where he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior, before the place where he preached his Trial Sermon and beside the baptismal font where he was baptized, standing with his new bride and children. From this platform he was launched to serve as the Youth Pastor of Saint Andrews African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church Wilmington, NC) and Walters Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Bolton, NC), the Organizer and Pastor of Kellinghusen African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Kellinghusen, Germany), Staff Minister at Mount Hebrew African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Fayetteville, NC), Staff Minister at Fayetteville Deliverance Evangelistic Center (Fayetteville, NC),  and Staff Minister at New Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church (Fayetteville, NC). The following are the official appointments that have been essential to this forty three year journey of gospel ministry: Dove Chapel (Fayetteville, NC), Big Zion (Kenansville, NC), Smith Chapel (Parkersburg, NC), Saint Stephen (Garland, NC), Mount Zion (Elizabethtown, NC), Bethel (Stantonsburg, NC), Mount Hebron (Hallsboro, NC), and Peoples (Palmdale, CA) and Supply Pastor Saint James Temple (Fairbanks, AK) Presently, He is appointed as Presiding Elder of the Los Angeles District. Additionally, Interim Presiding Elder of the Cascade and Anchorage/Fairbanks Districts. In every assignment he has held offices from the District to the Episcopal level. Additional, he has served in several Regional positions and has been Alternate or Delegate to the last four General Conferences. He has been afforded to privilege to preach in the Eastern North Carolina, Western, and North Eastern in addition to preaching and working in the South Africa and Virgin Islands Annual Conferences. Workshop Presenter, Facilitator, and other assignments has been the joy of his to fulfill at Connectional Meetings. Recently, he was elected as Recording Secretary of the International Presiding Elders Council. He wears with honor the Christian Education Department Life Member Stole, The Women's Home & Overseas Missionary Society Life Member Department Life Patron Stole with the Heart for Mission Pin, and the Connectional Lay Council Life Member Stole. Additionally, he is a Life Member of the Ministers and Lay Association. He has been a Delegate to the 2002 African American Evangelism Consultation World Methodist Evangelism Institute, and the 2003 Caribbean Regional World Methodist Institute (only A. M. E. Zion delegate). He was inducted into the World Methodist Order of the FLAME in 2005 at Epworth by the Sea, and in 2006 he was Commissioned a Cornerstone Celebration Herald at Scarritt Bennitt Center, with his class mates being Bishop Darryl Starnes, Bishop Bonnie Hines, General Officer Dr. Otis McMillian, Presiding Elder Eliazar Merriweather, and Presiding Eric Leake.

 

Civic - Alonzo Braggs has been active in the community of each area of his military and church assignments. A few of the highlights were serving as a member of the distinguished Fort Bragg Special Emphasis Board, President of the Garland Rotary Club, Vice President of the Sampson County Habitat for Humanity, President of Garland Ministerial Fellowship, Charter Member of Sampson County Family YMCA Board of Directors, Vice President of Sampson County U-Care Board of Directors, Candidate for Commissioner Town of Garland, President of Bladen Ministerial Association, Chaplain of Bladen County Sheriffs Department and Jail, Vice President of Bladen Crisis Assistance Center Board of Directors, Candidate for Mayor Town of Elizabethtown, Chaplain Staff of Bladen County Hospital, Parliamentarian of Bladen County Hope Network, Secretary and President of Wilson County Ministerial Association, Vice Chairman and Chairman of Wilson County Substance Abuse Coalition Board of Directors, Treasurer and Secretary of Wilson County Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, Vice Chairman and Chairman of North Carolina Rural Education Workers Group Advisory Council, Chairman of Saratoga Precinct, Wilson County Democratic Party, President Wilson Chorale Board of Directors, Hallsboro/Lake Waccamaw Faith Community Association Chairperson, Secretary of Delta Nu Sigma Chapter, Chairman of the Political Actions Committee of the Antelope Valley Branch NAACP, Secretary of Antelope Valley Pastors and Ministers Fellowship, Subscribing Silver Life Member of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, African American Faith Coalition, Kingdom Builders Fellowship, National Action Network member, Southern Christian Leadership Conference member, and a proud member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Employment - Alonzo Braggs graduated from John Thomas Hoggard High in 1978 in New Hanover County, North Carolina, and entered the United Stated Army and served for twenty years and was honorably retired. During his military career he attended several colleges and universities continuing his education at various assignments overseas and at home. God watched over him during his combat tour in Somalia and his peace keeping mission in Haiti. While in Honduras he hosted a two hour Christian radio broadcast each Sunday entitled "Jesus Lives". Although his primary job was in communications electronics, he was also certified as a Chapel Lay Leader and served as Acting Chaplain during some of his overseas assignments. He had additional assignments as Equal Opportunity/Human Relations Specialist, Military Academy Instructor, and Army Family Team Building Instructor. in 1998 he was the first soldier at Fort Bragg to receive the Equal Opportunity Employee of the Year Award for the Installation (this award has always been earned by a civilian). That same year he made a commercial for the Army Family Team Building Program. While in Germany and with the permission of Bishop Ruben Lee Speaks, he organized the Kellinghusen African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church and pastored the same until his return to America. Prior to High School graduation he worked at the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce and the City of Wilmington Department of Transportation.
